About CarrierOwl
What is CarrierOwl?
CarrierOwl is a free, modern interface for FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) carrier data. We make it easy to look up any USDOT-registered carrier in the United States and review their safety profile, inspection history, and crash records.
Whether you're a freight broker vetting a carrier, a shipper verifying safety compliance, or a carrier monitoring your own FMCSA profile — CarrierOwl gives you instant access to the data that matters.
Our Data Source
All data on CarrierOwl comes directly from the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census, a public dataset maintained by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This dataset is published under public domain and backed by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

How We Process the Data
Our automated pipeline syncs with the FMCSA census database every 24 hours. The raw data is parsed, validated, and stored in our database. We present it in a clean, searchable format without modification — what you see on CarrierOwl is exactly what FMCSA reports.
BASIC scores (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories) are percentile rankings calculated by FMCSA through the SMS (Safety Measurement System). A higher percentile indicates worse performance relative to peers. Scores at or above 75% may trigger FMCSA intervention.
